The 2010 Carling Cup final was won by Manchester United as they defeated Aston Villa 2-1 at Wembley.

Villa took an early lead when James Milner converted a 4^th minute penalty after Nemanja Vidic brought down Gabriel Agbonlahor in the area.

But United responded through Michael Owen and his replacement Wayne Rooney headed the winner 16 minutes from time.

It marked a 4^th League Cup triumph for Sir Alex Ferguson as the Reds defeated Villa for the first time this season.

Manchester United are into their 8^th League Cup final after seeing off Manchester City 4-3 on aggregate after an enthralling 2nd leg at Old Trafford.

United were trailing 2-1 from the 1^st leg but goals from Paul Scholes, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney gave Sir Alex Ferguson’s side a 3-1 victory on the night to deny the Sky Blues a first final appearance in this competition since 1976.

United went 2-0 up but Carlos Tevez looked to have secured extra-time after notching his 3^rd goal of the tie on 76 minutes. But Rooney had the last laugh, scoring an injury-time header to set up a final with Aston Villa and the chance to defend the trophy they won last season.

Bookmakers have installed United as odds-on favourites to win the 2010 Carling Cup Final.

Villa eyeing Carling Cup glory

Aston Villa are into their first League Cup final since 1996 after defeating Blackburn Rovers 7-4 on aggregate in the semi-final.

Manager Martin O’Neill tasted success in the competition with Leicester City in 2000 in the last League Cup final to be played at the old Wembley Stadium.

The Villains made it to this stage in the competition for 14 years, when they defeated Leeds United 3-0 in the final with goals from Savo Milosevic, Ian Taylor and Dwight Yorke.
